The Gravatar service has just unveiled a universal profiles feature and oAuth authentication. Basic user information, such as avatars and interests, can be populated using Gravatar data as well, automatically, if desired.
This service is in beta at the moment, so there's a waitlist to get an API key, but it would be great if phpBB was ready to utilize the feature by the time of its public opening.
